Building a Foundation

· Teachers must have a common understanding about PLCs.

· It is important to provide information about how they operate and why they are important.

· Remember, the main focus is on student learning.

Understanding Current Reality

· It is important that all teachers have analyzed data in order to see the reality of the situation.

· Teachers need this data to make informed decisions about what to focus on.

Creating a Collaborative Culture

· It is important that teachers have a time for collaboration; in the school day and throughout the school year.

· All teams should be focused on those four critical questions (What is it we expect students to learn? How will we now when they have learned it? How will we respond when they don't learn? How will we respond when they already know it?).

· Expectations of what products will be developed should be clear and explicit.

· It is important that teams develop norms together (ex: start on time, end on time; no grading papers,  proactive rather than reactive).  Norms will help keep everyone focused on the main goal, increasing student achievement.

· Create SMART Goals– It is important to set up specific, measurable, attainable, results oriented, and time bound goals.  These goals will help teachers stay focused on student learning/achievement.

· Lastly, make sure all teams have access to all relevant information/ data necessary.
